Week 6: February 15 & February 17

I submitted my paper 2 draft which was a Constructive Argument essay. One of the topics to choose from was government and law so I chose to write about the current event, the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. I learned that in a Constructive Argument essay you discuss all of the different aspects on the topic and then at the end you state your claim and your opinions. In the reading What Shamu Taught Me About a Happy Marriage, Amy Sutherland talked about a technique she learned from a dolphin trainer. She discovered that humans can be trained in the same sort of way. She suggests rewarding them when they do something correct and ignoring the things that they do wrong. We also read Beauty and the Beast. I thought it was very true what Dave Barry said about the differences in the way that men and women look at themselves. He made an interesting point about how young girls have Barbie and young boys have action figures. I didn't realize how big of an impact a toy can make on kids. Girls grow up and want to look just like theirs and boys grow up and want to be just like theirs. I liked that I was given the freedom to choose what I wanted to write my paper about but it made it difficult for me to decide with such a broad topic.
